2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic: TV schedule, predictions, tee times and more

The PGA Tour heads to the Midwest for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club in Motown.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club is a par 72 at 7,370 yards. Despite the weather conditions that brought down trees this past weekend, the tournament is still taking place with the help of the volunteers on site.

As a result of the weather conditions, that means the course is going to play soft and scores are going to be low, and likely to be lower than last week.

Speaking of last week, Keegan Bradley won the Travelers Championship in Connecticut at 23-under par. Bradley won last week by three strokes over Zac Blair and Brian Harman in his native New England for his sixth PGA Tour victory.

With the win, Bradley moved up 10 spots to No. 5 in the FedEx Cup standings as there are only eight events left to get within the top 70 to make the playoffs.

Last year, the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings made the playoffs. As a result, that means 55 spots that are not up for grabs compared to 12 months ago.

During last year’s Rocket Mortgage, Tony Finau won the event that began a stretch of three wins in seven starts that also included victories at the 3M Open in Finau’s next start and the Houston Open this past fall.

Finau is the second-highest player in the world at No. 14 competing this week. Only World No. 9 Max Homa is higher in the Official World Golf Ranking.

5 picks to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic trophy

Max Homa

Homa rolls into Detroit following a couple of missed cuts at the U.S. Open and the Travelers. However, Homa did put together a 65 in the second round of the Travelers last week. He’ll have an opportunity to reset this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he has made the cut in his three previous starts in Detroit and two top-25 finishes.

Homa has eight top 10s this season, including two at the Charles Schwab Challenge and Wells Fargo Championship within his last five starts.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler has revived himself this season with seven top 10s. He is coming off a T13 at the Travelers Championship that also included recording a 60 in the third round. Fowler also had three top-10 finishes before the Travelers as he looks to improve on his No. 17 ranking in the FedEx Cup Standings in the final stretch of the season.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas looked like he turned things around last week at the Travelers Championship with a T9 finish after a couple of missed cuts at the U.S. Open and the Memorial Tournament to go along with a T65 finish at the PGA Championship. Last week, Thomas recorded a 64 and a 62 in the middle rounds to put him in the running.

A big part of the two low rounds last week was that Thomas led the field in fairway proximity and par-3 scoring while placing second in strokes gained: approach the green. If Thomas can get his irons going like last season, he is a player to watch on the leaderboard as the tournament progresses.

Brian Harman

The lefty comes to Motown looking to capitalize on last week’s runner-up finish. Brian Harman, who currently sits at No. 19 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 27 in the world, has four top 10s this season that have also come at another designated event, the RBC Heritage.

Last week, Harman was fifth among the field with 24 birdies and third with just four bogeys. That has to continue for Harman as he looks to build on his place in the standings in this final stretch.

Zac Blair

Zac Blair enters this week coming off his best finish of the season, a runner-up finish at the Travelers Championship with a 20-under par score. He is going to have the shoot the same score, if not better to raise the trophy on Sunday.

Blair led the field last week in driving accuracy, successfully hitting 85.7% of fairways and was seventh in greens in regulation at an 81.9% clip.
